Summer seasonal issues

Summertime is full of many magic moments and various activities; for most people, there's nothing more thrilling than having longer days and basking in sunny weather. However, the summer has an ugly side, too, as it has its fair share of illnesses associated with it. Due to high levels of heat and humidity, there is an increased risk of certain health disorders such as heatwaves, dehydration, sunburns, rashes, etc.

What can help?

  • Days become shorter and we are exposed to less sunlight
  • Fewer opportunities for exercise with shorter days
  • Less fresh produce than in summer
nutri.svg During summer, heat and humidity can cause difficulty in air movement through our nasal passages and trap pollutants, molds, dust, and pollen into the airways; this can trigger shortness of breath, coughs, and asthma. Also, too much exposure to sunlight can result in painful sunburns, heatstroke and, even worse, skin cancer. To limit the effect of extremely high temperatures on your skin, wear protective clothing (should be light in weight and loosely fitted), sunglasses, hats, lip balms, etc., when going out in summer.
food.svg Some viral infections are also associated with summer seasons as certain viruses thrive in very extreme temperatures. For instance, chickenpox is most common among children during summer, and it is accompanied by undesirable symptoms such as painful rashes, blisters and headaches. Also, rhinoviruses can still cause common cold, flu and pneumonia in the summer, even though they are prevalent in cold seasons.

Three steps to improvement

There are a few things each of us can do for ourselves…

Drink Plenty of Water

During summer, we lose a lot of fluid as a result of high temperatures. Therefore, drinking enough water in these times is essential to avoid dehydration and heat waves.

Eat Healthy Foods

Whether indoors or outdoors, ensure the food you eat is thoroughly cooked and adequately prepared to avoid getting bacterial infections because a common issue associated with summer is food poisoning. Also, it is essential to keep perishable foods always refrigerated and avoid food in bad condition by all means.

Protect Your Skin

Exposing your skin to direct rays from the hot sun during summer can cause sunburns, heatstroke, and skin rashes. Also, skin cancer can develop from overexposure to UV rays from the sunlight. Here are a few tips to avoid these problems:

  • Wear protective clothing
  • Use sunscreen when having fun in the sun
  • Wear sunglasses outdoor
